Detonations and Low-Altitude Aircraft Reported in Venezuelan Capital Caracas

Reports emerged of several detonations and the sound of low-flying jets in the Venezuelan capital in the early hours of Saturday morning. This event has prompted allegations from the Venezuelan authorities and demands for global intervention.

Venezuela Blames Washington of Military Action

Venezuela's incumbent government has condemned the US of an act of "foreign aggression," stating that ex- President Donald Trump allegedly authorized attacks against the South American nation. In an official statement, the authorities stated that strikes had impacted Caracas and three other provinces: Miranda state, La Guaira state, and Aragua.

"The primary goal of this attack is to gain control of Venezuela's natural resources, especially its petroleum and minerals," the government said.

Venezuelan officials urged the global community to denounce the actions, which it described a "blatant breach of international norms" that put millions of civilians in jeopardy.

Accounts of Blasts and Defense Sites Hit

Residents spoke of feeling at least seven detonations around 2 a.m. local time. Citizens in various neighborhoods reportedly rushed into the streets.

"The whole ground shook. It was horrible. We experienced blasts and aircraft in the distance," said one local.

Plumes of smoke was seen billowing from two defense sites in Caracas: the La Carlota airfield and the Fuerte Tiuna base compound, where president Nicolás Maduro is reported to have a residence.

Global Reaction

The leader of neighboring Colombia, stated on a social platform that "Right now they are bombing Venezuela... attacking it with projectiles." He called for an urgent emergency session of the UN Security Council.

The Colombian government, which just joined the UNSC, said it would initiate operational plans at its border with its neighbor.

Context

These alleged strikes follow a extended pressure campaign by the Trump administration against the Venezuelan administration. Beginning in last summer, there has been a significant American military buildup off Venezuela's northern coast and a number of air strikes on boats suspected of illegal activities.

The government has stated "a state of emergency" and directed all national defense protocols to be implemented. It has also urged its political forces to mobilize and "reject this external act."

American officials and the Pentagon have not immediately commented on requests for comment regarding the events.
