Ghostface OG Star the Actor Is Anxious He Could Spoil the Series with the Seventh Installment.
The long-awaited horror film Scream 7 is scheduled to debut in theaters in the coming year, and it is gearing up for a major family reunion. This latest installment marks the iconic comeback of Neve Campbell as survivor Sidney Prescott, after sitting out the last entry. She will, as usual, be joined by Courtney Cox as journalist Gail Weathers, but they won't be the only beloved characters returning to the fray.
"Returning to a role you portrayed in your twenties when you're in your fifties was a daunting task that gave me sleepless nights," Lillard reveals.
An Unexpected Comeback for Fallon Characters
It has been established that a trio of distinct characters from past films are slated to reappear in this latest sequel, even though dying in previous installments. The precise method of their resurrection is still unclear. Audiences should get ready for the return of the endearing and nearly unkillable officer Dewey Riley, the director and Scream 3 antagonist Roman Bridger, and a member of the first film's murderous duo, Stu Macher.
The Weight of Legendary Legacy
For Matthew Lillard, returning to the series for the first occasion since a brief appearance is a long-held wish, though he is apprehensive about the audience response. The performer vividly recalls the exact moment he got the offer from the original writer.
"I remember the conversation. I remember the pleasantries. I remember him asking. That instance is indelibly imprinted on my mind," he states. "Therefore I'm incredibly honored to be back. I'm thrilled to be back."
Stu Macher has attained cult status in the decades since the original film premiered, which left Lillard feeling quite trepidatious.
"Truthfully, that's a role that lives in infamy, for better or worse," he notes. "A part that is now represented in each and every Ghostface mask that appears every October 31st."
The Anxiety of Letting Down the Fandom
Now that production has wrapped, Lillard is waiting as everyone else to see the finished film. He confesses to feeling significant pressure about hoping not to be the one who damages the beloved franchise.
"It's either a success and people are thrilled to have you, or it's a miss," Lillard points out. "At the start, I don't know if the movie's be successful. I am unsure if people want to see me. I've certainly seen enough people state and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they going back to this trope?' So the truth is that I feel a lot of pressure to not mess up the franchise. I hope people exiting Scream 7 and saying, 'Well, that was terrible, and Matthew Lillard was the reason.'"
Speculation and Excitement Abound
While many longtime fans are excited for Stu's return, the central mystery of how he and the others return persists. Perhaps they exist rent-free in Sidney's mind, similar to a prior storyline. Alternatively, maybe they are in some way all alive in a strange shared scenario. The possibility of a meta-horror story, reminiscent of earlier horror movies, also exists.
Moviegoers will discover the answer when Scream 7 arrives in theaters.
