Information Available About the Fatalities of the Bondi Terror Attack

No fewer than 16 people were killed and over 40 sustained injuries when assailants fired on a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local police have labeled a act of terrorism.

As of the newest reports, authorities have announced the number of fatalities is 16, including one of the suspected gunmen. Moreover, 42 people with injuries were admitted to the hospital.

Those who died are still awaiting officially identified, but investigators think their ages span between 10 and 87 years old.

Listed are the victims who are known so far.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Described as a father of five children, he served as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and friends described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member asked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.

She described the moments leading up to the shooting, explaining they were standing when the gunfire started. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she stated.

The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had later relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Officially, a senior official said that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the message continued.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was also killed in the incident, as per reports referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospitals, many are still under care, with several in critical condition. The injured include two police officers who attended the scene.

A casualty is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to confront one of the attackers. Hailed as a hero, he received gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. It has been reported he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he described the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the actions of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He said he listened to “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
