Italy and Canada have raised concerns regarding the handling of their nationals who were assaulted and robbed by Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank.

Particulars Surrounding the Violent Incident

A group comprising three Italians and one Canadian were attacked early on Sunday morning in the village of Ein al-Duyuk, near Jericho. They were serving to help protect the Palestinian population from intensifying settler violence.

“In the early morning of November 30th, a group of ten masked settlers, two carrying army-issued rifles, burst into the home where we were resting after a night shift,” stated the Canadian volunteer.

Each of the four required hospital treatment and one, an Italian man, was still receiving care in the city of Ramallah on Monday for more serious wounds.

Rising Tensions in the Village

The frequency and severity of attacks in Ein al-Duyuk have risen dramatically over the past two months. This follows the creation of an unauthorized settler encampment in the vicinity and the influx of new, confrontational settlers.

Local observers report that aggressive acts have become an almost daily occurrence. These incidents have involved settler mobs breaking into homes, beating villagers, and stealing livestock and property.

International Law and Government Reactions

While all settlements on occupied territory are considered unlawful by the international community, unauthorized outposts are also against Israeli domestic statutes. Ein al-Duyuk is in Area A of the West Bank, a zone meant to be administered of the Palestinian Authority.

Canada's Department of Global Affairs stated it “utterly rejects the violent acts committed by radical settlers and opposes any actions or talk about absorbing Palestinian land.”

Italy's top diplomat, Antonio Tajani, told reporters: “We have had enough of this aggression. This is not the way for anyone to make their claims.”

Lack of Intervention and Broader Context

Villagers and activists report there has been little effective action by security forces to halt the assaults or dismantle the outpost. Leading members of the Israeli governing coalition actively support West Bank settlers.

According to UN figures that Israeli settlers and security forces have killed more than 1,000 Palestinians, including 233 children, in the West Bank over the last 24 months.

Perspective from the Ground

The injured Canadian noted that, despite the attack, she felt the presence of volunteers in Ein al-Duyuk had been meaningful.

“The residents felt more confident while we were present,” she said. “Kids were able to play outside. People slept through the night. That alone made our presence justified.”

A local organizer working with groups that recruit foreign volunteers said the new outpost has brought in far-right wing settlers who seem to belong to an organised group.
