Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for hours when multiple of them floated into the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a approach that remains highly susceptible to weather factors rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that such operations become unprofitable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
Regional Security Context
The recent incidents occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
