New Year Revelers Told to Bundle Up with Snowfall Forecast Across the UK
Forecasters have indicated a chilly commencement to the new year, with snow likely across much of the UK. Revelers have been told to wrap up as near-freezing temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.
Celebratory Celebrations Continue In Spite of Warnings
Edinburgh's iconic Hogmanay festivities are expected to proceed, unlike last year's cancellation. This comes despite advisories for snow in northern Scotland.
"An icy New Year's Eve evening for those out celebrating, so extra layers will be necessary," noted the Met Office.
Displays Under Mostly Clear but Frosty Skies
In other parts of the UK, the weather is expected to be ideal for fireworks displays, with a lack of precipitation and clear skies. Temperatures are due to be chilly, meaning warm wraps vital, as per forecasters.
Further north, conditions will be cloudier, but this is unlikely to affect visibility for watching fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you will likely be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.
Widespread Advisories for Friday
Heading into Friday, weather warnings are active across Northern Ireland and from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and most of the south-east of England.

- Delays and cancellations are anticipated on public transport.
Readings Forecast to Plummet Even More
As 2026 begins, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," commented forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are forecast to drop further as snowfall and high winds are expected to batter the north of the country.
Approximately 10cm of snow is forecast to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the highest roads and hills.
Public Health Advisories Activated
At the same time, amber-level health advisories are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to continue until noon on 5 January, with readings expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.
The health agency explained this indicated the weather was expected to lead to notable consequences across medical and care provision. This involves a expected uptick in the number of deaths among those with health conditions or those aged 65 or over.
