Prince Andrew relinquishes his honor as Duke of York.

Royal figure under scrutiny
Prince Andrew has been under increasing attention over his associations with the convicted sex offender.

The royal is relinquishing his titles, including the Duke of York, he has announced in a personal statement.

He has been under mounting pressure over his links with convicted criminal the financier, with demands for the Palace to take action against him.

That now looks to have caused the prince deciding to voluntarily give up his designations and to surrender participation of the prestigious order.

In his statement he said he continued to "firmly dispute the claims against me".

"In discussion with the sovereign, and my close and broader family, we have concluded the continued accusations about me take away from the work of the King and the Royal Family," said a statement from him.

"I have chosen, as I always have, to put my duty to my kin and country first.

"I uphold my decision five years ago to withdraw from royal engagements.

"With His Majesty's approval, we feel I must now go a step further. I will therefore no longer use my honor or the honours which have been conferred upon me. As I have said earlier, I vigorously dispute the allegations against me."

He has faced a number of issues, among them a legal case he ended with an accuser, doubts about his finances and his connection with an alleged intelligence operative.

He will continue to be a royal - but will cease to be the Duke of York, a designation granted from his parent, the Queen Elizabeth II.

The prince had already ended to be a "active member" and had forfeited the use of his His Royal Highness designation and no longer participated at state occasions. His role now will be even more lessened.

His ex-wife will be known as Sarah Ferguson and no longer York's Duchess, but their daughters will continue to have the honor of princesses.

Prince Andrew has been under intense examination over his links with disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein, more in recent times featuring inquiries about when he had really ended communication.

In his BBC Newsnight interview, he had said that he had cut off all links with Jeffrey Epstein after they had been photographed together in New York in the end of 2010.

But messages sent in the following year later surfaced indicating that Andrew had privately remained in communication with him, such as exchanging a message: "Remain connected and we'll play some more soon!"

There had been increasing frustration in the monarchy at the issues that persisted to envelop the figure.

In the coming days a late publication by Virginia Giuffre will be released which is expected to draw further scrutiny on his association with Virginia Giuffre and the financier.
