Prison Surprise: Brazil's Ex-President Bolsonaro Confronts Time in Prison
He fought the legal system and justice won.
Sixty days subsequent to getting a twenty-seven-year sentence for attempting to “annihilate” Brazil’s political system, one-time leader Jair Bolsonaro finally seems headed to prison.
Expected Imprisonment
The found-guilty instigator – who has been living under residential detention in his residence while a set of judicial steps and appeals play out – is largely predicted to be incarcerated in the next few days, amidst mounting rumors that he will be sent to a well-known maximum security penitentiary.
Previous Remarks on Prisoners
Over Bolsonaro’s 40-year public life, the conservative ex- military man displayed minimal sympathy for the country's prison population.
“Why should we provide these dirtbags a comfortable existence?” he once mused. “They should just get screwed, full-fucking-stop. That's my opinion.”
In another instance, Bolsonaro proclaimed: “If you don’t want to end up there, all you have to do is to avoid rape, abduction or rob.”
Jail Facility Debate
However the possibility of Bolsonaro himself landing in the Papuda prison maximum security prison in Brasília has appalled allies, several of whom this week toured the facility in an obvious attempt to dissuade the high court from banishing him there.
Izalci Lucas, a senator from Bolsonaro’s allied group who was part of that quartet, stated he anticipated the 70-year-old figure to be incarcerated in the coming fortnight and worried his destination could be Papuda.
The senator argued Bolsonaro’s severe gut problems – the outcome of a life-threatening assault during the 2018 presidential election race – signified it would be hazardous to keep the ex-leader there. “His health is extremely serious. He won’t be able to cope if they take him to Papuda … It would be awful,” he commented, who also voiced anxiety about packed cells and the quality of jail cuisine.
When inspecting Papuda, Lucas remembered observing cells accommodating forty inmates: “That’s virtually one square meter per detainee.
“We conversed to the convicts and they complain, unsurprisingly, of the horrible food,” added the senator.
Backers Voice Concerns
The senator isn't the only voice voicing opinions before the one-time head of state's predicted incarceration.
Authoring in a prominent newspaper, another ally, the former communications minister Fábio Wajngarten, bemoaned the “brutal” end to Bolsonaro’s “spotless” political career and asserted Brazil was about to witness “the largest political injustice in its record”.
“It is an injustice that eats away the hearts of many Brazilian citizens,” he stated.
Varied Popular Response
This could be correct given the considerable support Bolsonaro holds on the Brazilian right. Yet his anticipated imprisonment has also pleased the feelings of many other people who feel he should be incarcerated for plotting to stop the elected leader from assuming office – and even plotting to have him murdered.
Congressman Otoni, a congressman for the current leader's political party, commented: “No one wants Bolsonaro to be put in a hole. Not a soul wants Bolsonaro to be sent in segregation. Not a soul desires Bolsonaro to go hungry or for him to have to rest on hard ground. We desire him to get proper handling – but proper treatment behind bars. He cannot carry on being his own prison warden for his entire life.”
The congressman noted how Bolsonaro backers, who have for a long time applauding the tough treatment of convicts, had suddenly become aware to their rights. “Just now has the conservative fringe – which has consistently argued that civil liberties are not for criminals – opted to inspect a prison to find out what situations are really like,” he remarked.
“He is a lawbreaker,” Otoni insisted, but that did not mean he earned “humiliating, degrading treatment”.
Possible Prison Conditions
Despite rumors that Bolsonaro could be transferred to Papuda, which presently contains about 14,000 prisoners, his expected destination seems to be a nearby prison for police officers and other “particular” inmates referred to as Papudinha (Little Papuda).
His potential cell are far more pleasant than those in the primary facility, although nonetheless a world away from the luxury Bolsonaro had while living in the stunning presidential palace, about 12 miles away.
As per information, the cell Bolsonaro could likely reside in in Papudinha has about 24 square meters – roughly the area of a couple of car spots – and features a 130 square foot WC with a bathing area and a 12 square meter veranda. “Bolsonaro would be permitted to have a set and additionally a minibar in his quarters as long as they were donated by his family,” information stated.
Partisan Reactions
The lawmaker condemned the speculated proposal to send the one-time head of state to Papuda as “an act of revenge” on the part of the presiding magistrate who led Bolsonaro’s proceedings and will rule on his outcome in the {
