Romanian Youths Accused in Rape Attempt That Sparked Riots See Case Withdrawn
Sexual assault charges against a pair of Romanian youths, that sparked extensive race-related unrest throughout the region, were dropped.
The boys, 15 and 14 years old, were accused of attempting to rape a teenage girl in the town of Ballymena, County Antrim on June 7th.

In a previous court hearing it was stated that the girl was pulled through a side street inside a vehicle shelter, but got away when her would-be attackers were disturbed and fled.
However, the prosecution service was granted permission to terminate the case regarding the two defendants due to "important new evidence", at Belfast Youth Court on Friday.
These young individuals are scheduled for release from the young offenders institution where they have been held for more than five months.
Court Developments
Another youth, allegedly connected in the alleged attack, is thought to have left to his home country the following day.
None of the accused may be named because of their youth.
After the reported incident, extensive race-related disturbances erupted in the town before reaching other parts of Northern Ireland.
Official Statement
A spokesperson for the Public Prosecution Service said:
- We have recently been made aware of crucial factual updates in this case
- Considering these developments, authorities have decided that the requirements for continuing the case is no longer met on factual basis
- Court officials and law enforcement investigators spoke to the alleged victim and her family earlier today to clarify the basis behind the withdrawal
Legal Hearing
The youths' lawyers expressed no disagreement to the motion to discontinue.
"The faster this information reaches to the detention facility the sooner both teenagers can be released," counsel said.
Court authorities said he was aware "this matter requires careful handling", adding that "limited discussion is most appropriate".
