That Gory Animated Movie Ending That Lingers Fans
Out of all the adult-oriented cartoon movies I have ever watched, nothing has lingered in my mind quite like the fear-filled finale of the explicitly bloody and deeply subversive 2022 movie The Unicorn Wars.
Back in 2015’s, the Spanish filmmaker crafted a grim, bleak and frequently brutal universe with some tiny , forlorn hints of hope.
While The Unicorn Wars appears as it originated from a drive to expand the medium further, the filmmaker clarified that it was more an attempt to convey a universal, cross-cultural message about “the mutual source of all wars.”
This theme is communicated via a squad of brightly hued teddy bears , obviously inspired by a well-known series of lovable characters.
Maturing in a society centered on militarism and the war machine, many of these creatures are consumed by slaughtering unicorns, due to a sacred text that claims the bears they previously were kings of the woodland, until these creatures drove them out.
A few haven’t fully bought into the brainwashing, , choose to try out narcotics or mate in the woods.
In contrast to their gentle counterparts, these bright beings have visible sexual organs , definite sex drives.
For a particular especially vicious, cynical bear, Bluey, the war with unicorns transforms into a path to control — and particularly to supremacy above his softer, nicer brother the character Tubby.
The character behaves aggressively and a seeming sociopath , and as fear takes over his group and claims his comrades individually, he takes increasingly influence on his own behalf, via progressively gory, damaging approaches.
At the same time, the unicorns are enduring their own terror, through an expanding, deadly beast in their forest.
“At the beginning, it appears as a humorous movie,” the filmmaker commented. “Yet it turns into a more intense and sorrowful movie. And in the finale, it’s a horror film.”
Unicorn Wars starts out feeling a bit like one of the most quirky features by a renowned filmmaker, which find a naughty glee in permitting drawn beings swear, fire weapons, or sex each other up.
Afterward it evolves into something more like a more grim film by that same creator, including ever more graphic violence and a tangible link to genuine horror of battle.
By the end, it is an outright Grand Guignol massacre.
The terror that makes the film an ideal spooky-season watch starts well before than one might expect.
Unicorn Wars is ideal for the devoted fans of gore, for fans of extreme cinema who wish to view a film they have not seen on-screen before, and who can handle a story that offers no restraint.
See it in a dark room with no disturbances, and the finale will dig into your mind and take up residence there.
