The Mayor-Elect states his intention to reside in the iconic Gracie Mansion
New York City's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to make his home in the historic Gracie Mansion, departing from the rent-stabilised apartment that was a central issue throughout his election bid.
A Historic Residence
Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the official residence for the majority of New York City mayors from the post-war period.
But, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a key platform, was not quick to announce this decision immediately following his victory in November.
"My choice rested on keeping my family safe and the need to focusing my full attention on carrying out the platform on affordability the city's residents voted for," the Mayor-Elect declared in a statement.
A Fond Farewell
Mamdani lived in the Queens borough of Astoria, a community renowned for its abundance of immigrant populations and international dining.
"To my neighbors in Astoria: my gratitude for showing us the true spirit of New York City," he expressed.
"Even though I'm moving in the neighborhood, the community will always live a part of me and the work I do," he affirmed.
Campaign Controversy
Throughout his race for mayor, Mamdani tied his core platform – halting rent increases – to his personal living arrangements.
Yet his opponents, mainly ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for remaining in the rent-stabilized unit despite the fact that he hails from a famous family.
Previous Exceptions
Not all mayors have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, preferred to remain in his own townhouse on the Upper East Side during his three terms, which ended in 2012.
In his view, Bloomberg felt it could serve as a venue for official events, and championed an extensive renovation of the historic mansion.
A Stately Residence
As he settles into Gracie Mansion for his swearing-in on 1 January, he will be surrounded by a setting very different than his previous Astoria home.
Adorned in pale yellow exterior, forest green window covers, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure situated by the East River.
Inside, the lower floor of the Federal-style mansion is furnished in the spirit of the home's early 19th-century origins.
The compound, which is said to has five bedrooms, also boasts increased security measures to secure the mayor and his family.
Supernatural Speculation
Some residents have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.
Chirlane McCray, the wife of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that doors would sometimes open and shutting on their own, and the floorboards creaked eerily.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "It doesn't matter what people claim," he insisted in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."
Affordable Housing Lifeline
His former home is rent-stabilized, a policy where the city sets limits on how much property owners can increase rent each year.
City residents consider these apartments valuable lifelines as the cost of housing rises faster than the average income.
Data indicated Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Based on data from real estate analysts Zillow, the median rent for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
