When an 18-year-old creates Real Madrid history in a pivotal Champions League tie against Manchester City, it naturally attracts acclaim and attention.

In only his maiden start in the competition - and fifth game for the club - Thiago Pitarch made a strong impression as the fifteen-time European champions secured a three-nil last-16 first leg lead at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The teenager, who also made his club debut in the qualifying round a month ago with a cameo off the bench at Sporting Lisbon, then assisted the Madrid side overcome the English champions in the midweek return to secure a quarter-final berth.

Aged 18 years old, Pitarch was the club's most youthful starter to start twice in the Champions League's latter rounds, surpassing Brazil forward Vinicius Jr's record by 10 days.

Rapid Ascent From La Fabrica

This talent is the most recent to emerge from the club's academy and is quickly establishing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most exciting protegees.

He joined Real from CD Leganes in the summer of 2023, having previously been with Atletico and Getafe's academies, and initially featuring for the Juvenil C team, where he rapidly created a strong impression.

He progressed to the reserve side and it was during a friendly match in which they played against the academy's first team, then coached by the former defender, where the teenager is said to have drawn the eye of the current Real boss, who replaced Xabi Alonso in the new year.

Spanish media would later describe the moment as "love at first sight," adding he excelled not only for his skill on the ball, but for the energy, character and drive he brought to the side.

'His Best Attribute Remains His Personality'

In the pre-season of 2025, former boss Xabi Alonso called up Pitarch to practice with the senior squad and awarded him minutes in pre-season.

Yet, it was Arbeloa's appointment that became the turning point in his development as he was introduced as a second-half replacement in each leg against the Portuguese side that led to the meeting with Pep Guardiola's team.

"I've dreamed of this each night when sleeping, the very first time I began playing the game, each day you head to training and every day you have a game," said the player following his first appearance.

"I've just fulfilled my ambition with the greatest club in the planet and in the best competition."

Given a starting debut in La Liga against his former club - where he was for four years after arriving from Atletico in 2018 - he has kept his spot for the next four as fitness issues to Jude Bellingham and Dani Ceballos provided an opportunity.

Pitarch has seized it with performances that have defied his age and inexperience.

"He is a very quick player, and you can see his capabilities," said Arbeloa. "He's extremely dynamic, with excellent stamina, effort and movement."

The player's mindset has also impressed his coach.

"His standout trait is his character," continued he. "He constantly demands the possession, and when pressed, he remains unfazed.

"I understand people are astonished to watch him start in a Champions League match, but he's playing because I had total trust in him to perform his normal game.

"Thiago will keep receiving chances with the first team. It is delightful to have a player like him."

A Future International Decision

Pitarch was born in a Madrid suburb, in the Spanish capital's community, and was raised fully immersed in the local game, progressing through youth setups before entering the club's renowned La Fabrica system.

He holds both Spanish and Moroccan nationality, giving him the choice to play for both nations at senior international level.

Under international regulations, players may appear for multiple nations at youth level without being locked in, with the ultimate choice only final once they play in a official senior international match.

Pitarch has played for the Spanish national team at underage levels, turning out for both the U19 and under-20 teams, and participated in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where La Roja reached the quarter-finals.

Nevertheless, he has yet to commit to either full national side, who are watching his rise with keen attention.

In a recent interview, Pitarch confirmed: "I haven't made my ultimate choice so far. Things are great with the Spanish federation, but I will reach a conclusion in the near future."

His situation echoes that of other dual nationality talents such as Real team-mate Diaz and Barca star Yamal. Whereas 18-year-old Yamal opted for Spain, Diaz opted to represent Morocco.

Eyes on the Prize

For now, his attention is on establishing himself in the Real side and repaying Arbeloa's faith.

He played over an hour in the 2-1 victory at the Etihad, which completed a 5-1 overall triumph and a quarter-final matchup with Bayern Munich.

He was replaced by another academy player in Manuel Angel underscored Arbeloa's trust in younger players to aid the team chase future success.

Following his impressive impact so far on European football's biggest stage, the midfielder is tipped to play a key role in that.

"Arbeloa treats me the same. We handle it very normally. I attempt not to think about it too much - I have to deserve my playing time on the pitch," he commented after the success at Etihad Stadium.
