The Showrunner Discloses He Has a Plan for How His Sci-Fi Series Might Finish... Currently.
The acclaimed writer-producer did not foresee that his new science-fiction series would emerge as a breakout success. “I am so grateful to the audience,” he states. “I did not foresee the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”
Now that Season 1 of the hit sci-fi show wrapping up—and the next chapter already in development—the creative team recently discussed the fan response and whether it will influence the narrative path of Pluribus.
Regarding the Incredible Audience Reaction
Anyone might to get distracted by the widespread acclaim and online debates about Pluribus. He is doing his best to avoid both.
“It's like being force fed something incredibly sweet and being tickled to death,” he describes. “It's the greatest thing, but I hear about it anecdotally, and that's by design. Not once have I looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever want to. Not because I don't care. It's a rabbit hole I know I would fall into and then I'd be never leaving the house from Home Depot and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”
Despite Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s it's impossible to ignore the immensely favorable response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it alter the course of the show.
“We don't try to change the plot,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not influenced by online forums.”
“It's wiser to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan adds.
A Pressing Query: Has Vince Gilligan Know the Ending of Pluribus?
So if the creative staff aren't taking cues by public opinion, can we assume they already know how Pluribus will finally conclude? In short yes… in a way.
“There are some potential directions about where the show might end up,” Gilligan reveals. “yet we stand ready to discard a decent plan for a more brilliant plan. That has held us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we get a better idea and I imagine we will be doing that.”
Alternatively, if all else fails, director and writer Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to use as a backup.
“I keep pitching that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and that's where they've been all along,” Smith quips, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”
Alternatively, why not reference the legendary finales?
“I'd love for Carol to wake up in bed beside Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile.
